Bellevue Cemetery, Bellevue NE
1 mile N Mission Ave (370) - Franklin St
One of the oldest in Nebraska; 1856 (Indians buried here, too)
Also proximity to other supposedly haunted locations
3/28/10, 2:15pm – 3:15pm; Site check:
Open/accessible, but visitors must depart by 10:00pm – so no nighttime visits. But a summer evening, maybe. Very narrow roads/paths for at least 50% of the site – no room to pull to the side if someone wanted to get by, etc. I thought it was very pretty; picturesque, almost. Very well maintained. A mixing of old and new graves. I didn’t feel comfortable stopping to get out and look around; maybe with someone. All set on a side of a hill; the farther down you go, the newer the graves. Towards the middle of the hill, there were places to stop and park. Trash bins, etc, gave it almost a ‘park’ feeling. It was downright cheery on the day I visited.
The housing areas that border the cemetery are quite wooded, and with the hills/fir trees, it did not feel like Nebraska at all. I tried to locate the 'park' that was supposed to border the cemetery, but I don’t feel I really found it. There was a "park-like area", on Washington Street - but just a wedge-shaped lot with a small grassed area and chain-link fencing. More an elaborate dog-run, than a park.
Just past the ‘park’, I noticed a narrow dirt road. Good thing I was driving the Jeep. (Canyon Road/Hidden Hills) ...Suddenly, I am amidst deer, under a tree canopy, see a road going to nowhere (Combs road), and driving up some crazy hills. More like Colorado than Nebraska for a moment, there.
I also found a dead end (past the ‘park’); something called “Horton’s”. Curious to find out what that complex is. On the way back to the main part of Bellevue (Mission Ave & Main St), I came across the Fontenelle Bank & County Courthouse; defaced with new handicapped accessible walkways, of course. Also interesting.
