Frederick Hotel, Loup City, NE
Location: Frederick Hotel, Loup City, NE
Date: October 30, 2010
Hours: 9:00 p.m. to 2:30 a.m.
Weather conditions: Chilly outside. Light wind.
Investigators: Dennis, Rick, Julie, Jane and Tim. Tim departed the building approximately 10:00 p.m.
Equipment: Three Sony digital recorders, one Radio Shack analog cassette recorder with external microphone, a hand held video recorder, a VHS video recorder w/microphone and a K2 meter.
Introduction: Meeting with hotel owners George and Judy McFadden. George graciously gave investigators a tour of the hotel and explained its history (as known to him) and showed us some of the improvements he and his wife had made/ were in the process of making.
Ambient sounds: Typical external street sounds. Notable interior sounds included a beverage cooler, large fish tank, humidifier in the basement; any noise in the lobby echoed loudly throughout the entire building.
Investigation: Investigators spent time (in pairs) listening in various rooms on the second floor, in the old cafeteria, and the office/conference room. Julie spent time alone in the lobby; Dennis spent time alone in the office/conference room.
Throughout the building, investigators noted hard to explain EMF spikes on the K2 meter. Dennis and Julie appeared to be getting responses to verbal questions (according to the K2 meter readings) in the office/conference room; requesting the K2 to be lighted if a question was true.
Julie and Jane reported similar experiences in the second floor hallway, and again (later) in the hallway with all investigators present. Some of these activities were also recorded on the video camera.
Investigators observed similar K2 spikes in Room 17 – where, in the 1940’s, a man is rumored to have committed suicide. One of the hotel’s owners was present in the room to observe the “responses”. *Whether or not the K2 definitively indicates communication with someone or something is open for speculation; it was quite impressive, though!*
Throughout the investigation, investigators encountered unexplainable electrical anomalies; the hand-held video camera powering down (while sitting unmanned on a desk in a hallway), two hand-held radio batteries (fully charged at the beginning of the investigation) uncharacteristically losing charge approximately an hour into the investigation, and problems with the digital recorders nearing capacity early in the investigation.
Personal experiences: Cold spots/breezes, unusual behavior of external wind/leaves on the north side of the building, uneasiness in the basement boiler room, déjà vu in the basement, and a distinct sensation of movement (as if someone were moving quickly behind the investigators).
Aural experiences: Investigators reported many thumps, whispers, voices and various odd unexplained noises.
Audio recording results: After analyzing audio from all equipment, approximately twenty significant sounds were isolated (to present to the clients later). The sounds range from whispers to guttural sounds and two could be interpreted as saying, “Occupied”, and, “Yeah, right”.
Video recording results:
Investigators, up to this point, had yet to have employed video cameras on an investigation; inexperience with their usage affected the quality of the recordings. In the future, someone may be assigned exclusively to monitor/capture all video recordings. Besides the K2 exchanges, the only other phenomena caught on the video camera was a whisper (which was also recorded on a digital voice recorder).
Conclusions: While nothing of note was captured on either video camera, investigators did record some aural anomalies which could not be readily/easily explained.
Investigators do not feel qualified, or compelled, to definitively say whether or not a location is “haunted”. In this instance though, it is the investigators’ conclusion that the Frederick Hotel may possibly possess residual energies that intermittently replay pieces of its history, as well as the possibility that a benevolent presence may indeed exist.
*Please see below for some select EVP's captured during the investigation. Listen and come to your own conclusions!*
"I tried to include a range of EVP examples; some quite surprising, some more ambiguous. Not every EVP is going to be earth-shattering, but they are all useful in their own ways. All EVP's provide information that is useful to an investigation." ~A.
