Portal Cemetery, Sarpy County, NE
2WD roads In Omaha 1 mile NW of 108th & Giles In an area North along Harry Watanabe Parkway.
Cemetery; lore is that, "there was an axe-wielding teacher running around chopping off the heads of students and burying their hearts under a nearby bridge. Nothing is known to remain of the town today."
3/28/10 3:20pm – 3:30pm Portal Road
Along the drive: Juvenile Justice Center – Ironic, ha. A derelict dump, new suburban cookie-cutter housing, and industrial businesses the whole way. Very desolate. Bleak.
3:30pm – 3:45pm Portal Cemetery
Very tiny. Maybe the size of a lot that you’d build a small cottage on. Surrounded by industrialization. At first glance, it looks forgotten, but there are signs of recent visitation. Looks accessible, but would it be fruitful (or worth it)? There aren’t any “No Trespassing” signs, but there is no parking, it is highly visible, and just doesn’t seem like it would have much to work with.
I was not able to bring a map with me, and so I had some difficulty locating Harry Watanabe Parkway (to look for signs of the town) – that will have to wait until next time.
