Cameron Cemetery
_ Location: Cameron Cemetery, Hall County, Nebraska
Date: August 26 and September 30, 2011
Time: Between 8:00pm and 12:00am.
Weather Conditions: Clear skies, temperatures in the high 80s. Humid. Very light breezes, if any.
Investigators: First investigation; Rick, Ben and Dennis. Second investigation, Rick, Dennis and Jane.
Equipment: Four Sony digital recorders, two Olympus digital recorders, and two small digital cameras.
Ambient noises: Passing traffic, livestock in surrounding pastures, nearby farmhouse, dog, grain bin dryers, air traffic overhead.
During the first investigation, the overwhelming sound of crickets and cicadas made making any definite determinations of possible EVPs almost impossible.
During the second investigation, after some colder weather, the number of bugs was reduced markedly, making sound identifications much easier.
Despite being in a location fairly removed from the towns of Wood River and Cairo, Cameron Cemetery is located along a very busy stretch of road which sees high traffic all year round – not just during harvest season. The farmhouse just across the road, southeast of the church, is also a very active place. Grain bin dryers located to the south caused some problems, as did the white noise created by crickets and cicadas before the colder weather set in.
All these factors made for a lot of ambient noise; that made it difficult to pick out sounds eminating from the cemetery, despite the fact that it is ringed by evergreens and different varieties of trees along the creek to the north.
The trees that surround the cemetery create an enclosed feeling; as night sets in that creates a somewhat creepy atmosphere, overall.
One of the oddest things encountered by investigators was just west of the church (in the eastern section of the site); Rick, Jane (and eventually, Dennis) came upon one small area that had a distinct, strong smell of ozone (or a similar smell with an electrical quality) which they were unable to explain.
In all, both investigations were pleasant and investigators captured a few sounds that they were unable to explain completely. After much debate, only one EVP was added to the Nebraska Phantasms website.
